DIVIDE; When choosing this issue’s theme, we started off discussing the digital divide; differences in access, in power, in who is affected and how.
But divides are found everywhere – between technology and nature, between intention and use, between global platforms and national governments, between knowledge, power and distribution. And that’s when we knew we had our word – as Teknovatøren for many years now has used such ubiquitous words as lenses to explore contemporary cases, research and pressing issues.
In this 28th issue of Teknovatøren, we explore some of the divisions that shape today’s technological and societal landscape – from political governance and EU policy, to artificial intelligence and knowledge, surveillance technologies and the challenges of climate and environmental change.
At the core of what we study at TIK – Technology, Innovation and Culture – lies the question of how humans innovate, interpret, shape and are shaped by technology, knowledge, politics, economy and culture.
Technology can both exclude or include, adapt or disrupt, integrate or fragmentize. Policy can both polarize and unite. Governance can contain technological change – or unleash it.
Innovations and technology itself can produce divides – but can also bridge them. This is why divides are worth studying: they may reveal opportunities for change. Some divisions are planned, others unintended. Some create barriers, others create opportunities. Studying divides in different ways, allows us to look further into tensions and the forces that shape our present – to better our future.
In this issue, you will find interesting perspectives, insights and knowledge on contemporary issues and technological developments – written by engaged and talented masters students.
All the topics of this magazine, shed light on an enduring question: How do we understand, navigate, and sometimes bridge the divides in our societies? We hope this issue leaves you with valuable insights, and sparks some reflections– about different ways the world is divided, and how knowledge of these divides can help shape better futures.
With great excitement we give to you the 28th issue of Teknovatøren.
Enjoy!
